It
all started out pretty simple. A couple of five gallon plastic pales,
canned malt extract and a packet of yeast. If you have ever tried
your hand at this hobby, then you probably started out in similar
fashion.
Boiling five gallons of wort on the kitchen stove was not too bad,
but cleaning up after the occasional boil-over is a pain. The beer,
dubbed "Fire Chicken Ale" due to its' higher than average
alcohol content, turned out OK. I was proud of that first effort and
served it at a party in my home. Consumption of this beverage caused
a few guests to go ugly early. After a few more batches and
reading Charlie Papazian's books, the beer started tasting better,
and in fact pretty good. I
had found yet another hobby, and as any of my friends or my wife can
attest, my hobbies can get a bit out of control. The five gallon plastic
pales are a distant memory as well as canned malt. Anyway, what fun
is a hobby if it you can't turn it into rocket science?
If you've
ever brewed an all-grain batch then you know what a production this
can be. After my second all-grain batch I thought to my self "You
know? I could make twice as much in the same amount of time".
I would just need a larger mash tun and kettle and a stand and high
pressure burners and pumps and and my wife is probably starting to
wonder if buying beer at the store was such a bad thing... |
